Former Trinamool Congress MLA Sabyasachi Dutta was arrested by Bidhannagar City Police in the early hours of Tuesday following allegations of extortion, corruption and intimidation.
Police sources said Dutta, a councillor of Ward No 31 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and a former chairman of the civic body, was taken into custody after a complaint lodged by a businessman from Salt Lake.

The arrest comes amid increasing scrutiny of political leaders and local power centres in West Bengal over allegations of corruption and misuse of influence. Investigators are also examining earlier complaints that had surfaced against Dutta over alleged extortion, intimidation and other irregularities in the Rajarhat-New Town belt.
According to sources, officers from Bidhannagar North Police Station reached Dutta’s residence in the Raigachi area of Rajarhat shortly after midnight. He was questioned at length before being formally arrested early Tuesday morning.
Investigators said the latest action followed a written complaint accusing the former MLA of extortion and threatening behaviour. Officials are also looking into other allegations that had been reported against him in the past.
Dutta represented the Rajarhat-New Town Assembly constituency for two consecutive terms between 2011 and 2021 on a Trinamool Congress ticket. Ahead of the 2021 Assembly election, he switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested from the Bidhannagar constituency.
He lost that election to senior Trinamool leader Sujit Bose, a former state Fire Services Minister.
After the 2021 Assembly polls, Dutta returned to the Trinamool Congress when the party secured a third successive term in power in West Bengal.
In the recently concluded Assembly election, which ended the Trinamool Congress’ 15-year rule in the state, Dutta contested from Barasat but was defeated.
Police sources said he would be produced before a court in North 24 Parganas after undergoing a medical examination. Prosecutors are expected to seek judicial custody.
